I learned a huge lesson from helping people package their passion over the past few years. There is an error I see people commit time and time again with almost no one willing to stop it from happening. If you do not remember anything else from this post, remember this – just because you love cakes, does not mean you have to bake them. Yes, you heard me right. Too many people think because they love a particular subject, topic, interest, etc., they have to be the ‘technician’ behind it. We have to stop this! (I used to be guilty too). There are more ways to express your passion, and I share this when I work with clients on the Package my Passion Program.
Do you know those combination locks with digits you have to align to open the lock? That is the same way you have to find the right combination for the components of your passion so you can express them effectively and get the desired results.
I am going to use my big sister as a client example here. My sister is exceptionally creative. As far back as I can remember my sister has always been hands-on with her talent. As her human guinea pig, I have proudly worn hairstyles that had no meaning, clothes that were barely hanging on and bizarre styles I could not understand. Over the years, she has developed her talents into a money-making venture by sewing beautiful styles for so many people of which I am the primary recipient. As she grew, I watched her battle with her niche market, trying to be all things to all men and drop some balls a few times along the way.
Well, they say you should not coach your family, but I threw caution to the wind and decided to help her package her passion. First thing, we had to do was identify and clarify her dominant strengths and combine them to create her unique offerings. My sister is an exceptional teacher and has an innate ability to disseminate information in such a simplistic way so anyone would understand. Combined with her love for fashion, Flair 4 Fabrics was born. This year has been her best year yet, as she runs her full-to-capacity sewing workshop every month. Her students love her, and just cannot get enough. Well, I am proud to say, she is branching out, and I cannot wait to see her 2017 results.
Are you Creating Clarity or Confusion?
You might be wondering where I am going with this story. Well, until you identify the best combination of your key strengths, you may find yourself going around in circles trying to meet everyone’s needs. I was like that a few years ago, dabbling in coaching, branding, web design, social media, copywriting etc. The more I did, the more frustrated I became. Then one day, I cut the cord on many of my services and now focus on my key strengths. I must confess I do get tempted to flesh out all of my ideas. However, I learned that if I want to be the expert in my field, focus and streamlining is crucial.
What talents, strengths, passion, experience and knowledge are you combining now? Is it creating clarity or confusion? Do people know your key strengths or genius zone? Are people clear on what you offer or intend you offer?
I am going to give you one task to do before the end of 2016.
Get Clear on your Genius Zone.
Yes, find what makes you tick, what you do best and what makes you truly happy. It does not matter if you have been working in the same business or career for 10 or 15 years or even if you are just starting out. Taking time out to revisit your ‘why, what and how’, will make a huge difference to your state of mind.
